How Do You Make Popcorn In A Brown Paper Bag

No oils needed

Ever since I can remember, cooking oil was always used to make popcorn. Or, avoid the time it takes to cook popcorn on the stove and buy microwavable popcorn. However, I discovered that you can make popcorn with just a brown paper lunch bag and 1/2 a cup of popcorn kernels placed in a microwave oven.

Start with a paper lunch bag.

Add 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels.

Fold the opening of the bag over, twice.

Cook on high for up to 3 minutes.

I tried microwaving the popcorn for 3 minutes and it burned. Adjust the time to compensate for your microwave. Also, I used small popcorn kernels bought from my local farm store. So, this might have contributed to the popcorn burning the first time I tried this method. The next batch I made, I only microwaved for 2 minutes and the bag of popcorn was a success.

Add your topping of choice.

  1. This is such a great idea and so much better than the bags you by at the store. Don't they have some chemical that can cause cancer? I've not bought them since after I heard that. I bought myself some brown paper bags and use your method and you can't beat it! I do notice if my kernels are a bit older, they don't pop as well. Great post!!!! Have a great day Kathy!

    1. I have heard that those microwavable bags are not god for you. I have not bought anymore, either, after hearing that. I do have a popcorn maker that requires you to stir the kernels in oil. I was using coconut oil until I heard of this easier way to make popcorn. Maybe that was wrong with my popcorn the kernels are older. Thank you for stopping by!!! :)

  2. Who new? This almost seems to good to be true! My daughter loves popcorn, I think it's because she couldn't eat it when she had braces so she's making up for it now. But like Meredith said I always worry about the chemicals they put in microwavable bags. I'll certainly give this a try.

    1. Sally I just saw another way to make popcorn if you do not have brown paper bags handy. Put 1/4 cup of kernels in a glass bowl, cover with a ceramic plate. Do not know how long to let it pop, but this sounds great also. I have no tried this yet. But will give it a try soon. Have a great day!!! :)
