How To Freshen Your House With Cinnamon, Oranges, and Nutmeg

Using natural ingredients from your pantry, you can create a chemical free house freshener.

Many of your popular room fresheners, including plug ins and sprays, contain harmful ingredients. Make your own room freshener with healthy items that you keep on hand in your pantry.

With items from my pantry I used:

A fresh orange (or lemon)
6 cups of water
A few cinnamon sticks
2 heaping teaspoons of nutmeg
2 heaping teaspoons of cloves

Directions:

Put the 6 cups of water in your pot or pan.
Peel off the rind from your orange (or lemon).
Add the rind to the water.
Add in your spices.
Put the burner on low heat.
Allow the room deodorizer to simmer.

Your house will smell, amazing.

I did not want to ruin a pot that I use for cooking, so I went to my local Goodwill and found a heavy duty Club aluminum pan in which to simmer the house freshener.

“Smell is a potent wizard that transports you across thousands of miles and all the years you have lived. The odors of fruits waft me to my southern home, to my childhood frolics in the peach orchard. Other odors, instantaneous and fleeting, cause my heart to dilate joyously or contract with remembered grief. Even as I think of smells, my nose is full of scents that start awake sweet memories of summers gone and ripening fields far away.”  Helen Keller

*Watch the water level as the potpourri simmers. A higher flame causes the water to evaporate quickly.

Now to you-

What ingredient would you add to this house freshener recipe?

  1. I love simmering in the winter, it also puts much needed moisture in the air.
And any other time, I love using a diffuser with oils.

    Have a great 4th of July! :)

    1. Diffusing oils is my favorite way to rid my home of pesky smells. Plus, peppermint in the winter gives that holiday feel!
      Thank you for stopping by!
