Want wild hair?

This post is for my good friend, Colleen, and my sister-in-law. I informed them that I was taking Biotin. (Please see Dr. before taking any medicine.) Colleen had not heard of this. My sister-in-law knew of a friend who was taking it but didn't know about all of the benefits of the vitamin, Biotin.
The primary role of biotin is in the metabolism of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. Biotin functions as a critical component of
several enzymes (where it functions as a coenzyme) involved in energy metabolism (such as pyruvate carboxylase). Biotin helps in the synthesis of fatty acids, in energy metabolism, and in the synthesis of amino acids and glucose. Biotin is also involved in making glucose, some amino acids and in energy production. Vitamin H plays a special role in enabling the body to use blood sugar (glucose), a major source of energy for body fluids. Biotin supplements may improve thin, splitting, or brittle toe and fingernails as well as hair health. Biotin has also been used to combat alopecia (partial or complete loss of hair) in both children and adults. Biotin is typically included in most multi-vitamin supplements.
Biotin is used to treat the biotin-responsive inborn errors of metabolism holocarboxylase synthetase deficiency and biotinidase deficiency. Large doses of biotin may be given to babies with a condition called infantile seborrhea or to patients with genetic abnormalities in biotin metabolism. Biotin supplements are sometimes given to help reduce blood sugar in diabetic patients. People with type 2 diabetes often have low levels of biotin. The major benefit of biotin as a dietary supplement is in strengthening hair and nails. Biotin supplements may improve thin or splitting toenails or fingernails and improve hair health. Some skin disorders, such as "cradle cap," improve with biotin supplements. Biotin has also been used to combat premature graying of hair, though it is likely to be useful only for those with a low biotin level. Biotin has been used for people in weight loss programs to help them metabolize fat more efficiently.

Kitchen Shelves

Yesterday I worked all day in my kitchen. I moved things to different cabinets. I took out the television that sat on top of the refrigerator and put it in the attic. I condensed the Gladware to one shelf. And just moved things that I hadn't touched in a while. Some things are going to the goodwill. Earlier in the fall, we took a cabinet off the wall. It was a pre-fab cabinet and did not extend all the way to the wall. There was the wall, a space, then the cabinet. I was not happy with this look, so I asked my handsome husband if he thought shelves would look appropriate and not out of place there. He said, "No, shelves would look fine." I have heard it said that your home is, "a work of art in progress." And so it is.
So this is what I have in mind.

This picture is my favorite.
I have lost some cabinet space until the shelves are built. So yesterday, I "tweaked" the kitchen and added more space for food. In this process, I was able to be rid of "stuff." The past year I have been following the phrase Less stuff=Less stress. The back of my car is filled with de-cluttered items. I really need to go to the Goodwill!
Today I visited my public library and checked out 3 books. My handsome husband tells me I am very fidgety when I do not have a book to read.

A Week in Winter by Maeve Binchy

This book is very good so far... I better get back to reading.

The 5k was today

November 24, 2013

Today was the 5k race. At 9:00, when the race started it was 16 degrees Fahrenheit. A little chilly, but the morning was gorgeous. Mist was rising off the lake as the geese honked and flew by us. Beautiful! The race started with the firing of the gun. Away went the avid racers. It was exciting to watch them start off. I stayed at the back of the race. I wanted to be out of everyones way. I kept a steady pace. I couldn't believe that I was actually "running," really a fast walk, but it was so exciting. The path we ran on had some hills. I tried to push myself on the down hills and maintain a steady pace up the hills. People were very nice and said "Nice job" to one another as they passed by. I loved it. We had to cross 2 bridges. They were covered with frost. I took careful steps on the bridges. We were told that someone would be at the halfway point. I was so excited to finally see this person. I knew the hardest part was over.
My race results were 43.32 minutes. However, I was most excited that I actually finished the race. I did it at my own pace. I pushed myself, but not so hard that I had a heart attack. Thank goodness for my lucky hat! I am taking the next couple of days off from walking to give my aching joints a little break.
Here are a few pictures

Here I am just as I started to pick up my pace. My handsome husband took pictures for me.

5k run

Almost finished!
I pushed myself harder from here. Because I was so ecstatic that I really had done it and because people were watching!
This is my number and the shirt they gave out.

I have already started searching the internet for another race to participate in.

I want to thank everyone for reading as I embarked on this journey and fulfilling a dream come true.

Tomorrow, Nov. 24 is the 5k

November 23, 2013

Tomorrow is the big day. I have been walking, running, and eating healthy. I am ready to go. Not so sure about the weather though. Tonight the low is supposed to be 2 degrees. Yes, thats right 2. A little chilly. The high for tomorrow is 28 degrees. Perfect weather actually. No snow or rain forecasted, so that is good. I will definately be wearing my knit leggings lined with fleece. They are so warm. Love them. Also, my stocking cap, which is fleece lined and has flaps to cover my ears.

I will be plenty warm and plenty nervous.
But, I am so excited!

Flashback Friday

Today I'm flashing back to my Barbie carrying case. In this case you kept your Barbies and all of their clothes. I had hours of fun playing with my Barbies as a young child.
Here is a picture of the carrying case. There is a date of 1969 on the outside of the case.

On the inside I have the clothes that I used to dress up the Barbies.

My parents had a few of my brother's and my toys stored in their basement. When we had families of our own, they gave them to us. My brother had G.I. Joes. We had a lot of fun
(back in the day) playing with our Barbies and G.I. Joes.
My grandmother made some clothes for the Barbies. Here are a pair of flared leg pants that my grandmother sewed for me. The green felt type material are also clothes that my grandmother made for me  to use for the Barbies. She made a cape, a jumpsuit, a dress, and a fringed jacket.

Gluten free vegetable soup

November 18, 2013

I was searching for a vegetable soup in my cookbooks. I couldn't find any that I wanted to try. So I created a soup recipe of my own. I started with a gluten free vegetable broth and went from there. I added frozen corn, frozen green beans, and lentils.

home made gluten free vegetable soup
I also added some potatoes but I forgot to put them in the picture. For spices I used onion powder, dryed garlic chips, and pepper. I let it cook in the crockpot all day. I cooked the noodles separately and added them to my bowl of soup.
The soup was delicious if I do say so myself. It was a thick soup because I didn't add any water to it. Which is what I had in mind.
I have made this soup again, only this time I used Great Northern beans instead of lentils. It was just as good if not better because the beans were bigger and had a nice meaty texture to them. Since I recently became a vegetarian, this was a pleasant surprise.

If you have a recipe for gluten free vegtable soup, please share them with me. I enjoy trying new recipes and ideas.

Rather large cupcakes

November 16, 2013

The 5k is only 7 days away. I have been walking/running in the mornings everyday. Everyday I feel that it is easier to run. I have been maintaining healthy eating habits ever since the cupcake fiasco. So I am right on track.
When I made my cupcakes the other day, to my surprise, my hand mixer did not function. I vaguely remember putting the mixer away with the smell of electrical burning. But I thought it will just fix itself. Low and behold, it did not fix itself and it would not operate. What is wrong with the world? So I had to find a new hand mixer. After searching the world wide web for hand mixers at stores near me, I found one I was quite happy with at Kmart and it was on sale. It is a Hamilton Beach 6 speed mixer, with a container that attaches to the mixer to hold all of the attachments in one place. Very handy.
Hamilton Beach blender
Let me tell you about my deal I was able to get. The mixer was on sale for $19.89. I handed the cashier my coupon for points I wanted to use. He told me I was eligible to use $10.00 worth. Oh my, I only paid $9.89 for this mixer. High five. But does it work?
I opened the box and it is a very heavy mixer. The attachments were sturdy. I loved the little whisk that came with the set.
A little back story. The mixer that decided to burn was from Walmart. The cheapest mixer they had. I didn't care what kind of mixer I bought at the time, I just wanted a cheap one.
OK, this mixer is so much more heavy duty. I had to try it out. I made my husband and son some cupcakes. I washed the attachments and mixer per the instructions. I started mixing away.

Hamilton Beach blender
The mixer is designed to sit on the edge of the mixing bowl. So handy. This mixer sure had some power. I only used the second setting and it mixed the ingredients very well. It also has a button to push on the handle for a quick burst of speed. Very cool.
Now I am not saying the mixer did this to my cupcakes, but look how huge they are.

large cupcakes
They overflowed the cupcake wrapper! Maybe I added too much batter to the wrapper? We'll just say it was the mixer. Anyway, I am very pleased with my purchase.

Let me know if you have done any baking lately.

Gluten free cupcakes

November 14, 2013

On Monday and Tuesday the temperature was, consecutively ,14 and 15 degrees. So, I walked on my treadmill, which is in my garage. It was still chilly, but I was out of the wind. On Wednesday, I took an actual rest day and baked in my kitchen instead. I made gluten free chocolate cupcakes with white frosting.
gluten free cupcakes
Now I just used a box mix with white frosting. The box did say to use a half cup of butter. However, I am not using dairy in my diet. So I substituted a half a cup of light olive oil. Now, let me tell you, at first, this scared me to death because the batter was very runny. I thought, oh my goodness, I have ruined the batter. I thought about throwing it out. But then I thought, oh well, lets just see how this does. So I stuck them in the oven. The directions said to let them bake for 18 to 20 minutes. However, I left them in for approximately 25 minutes. They appeared to be fine, but I needed to try a taste test. They came away from the wrapper and looked delicious. Of course I had to try 2. (Just to make sure they were good.) Then, I covered them with the frosting. Oh my, more taste testing, just to make sure. After another 2, I will tell you that they were perfect. I have made these cupcakes before. That time though, I used butter. Even with the olive oil these cupcakes taste just like
Hostess Suzy Q's. I love Suzy Q's. So you can imagine how excited I was when I made a gluten free version.
Well then this morning, after all of those cupcakes that needed tested, plus more after supper, let's not go into too much detail, but this mornings walk was a little labor intensified. I was struggling. Well, when I got home, instead of testing more, I bagged the cupcakes into a freezer Ziploc bag and put them in the freezer. Now with the holidays fast approaching, I will be able to enjoy a gluten free treat with everyone else.
I am interested in making a healthier snack. Maybe a type of gluten free granola. If anyone out there has a few good recipes. Let me know. I really need some healthier snacks in my life.

Gluten free oatmeal

November 8, 2013

I do not remember what day of walking it is, but I walked Week 2 day 3 on my app. When it comes to numbers my mind goes blank. Seriously, it does, ask my husband. Today was, I'm going to say 27 degrees again. I forgot to check the temp. But it felt as cold as yesterday. I kept up with the app and ran when it told me to. Which is what I'm striving for. So funny, but what if the app told me to stop and do jumping jacks would I do it. Just wondering. I digress.
Ok, today I did another morning of oil pulling and I did really well. Only 2 slight swallows of coconut oil toxic poison. I was so excited. What do they say, practice makes perfect? Anyway, I did it. And let me just add that last night I slept like a baby. One of the many benefits of oil pulling.
Could you imagine if I called Poison Control and told them I had swallowed coconut oil as I was oil pulling? What if they told me to do jumping jacks? Would I do it?
I found some gluten free oats at Big Lots. This big bag was $6.00. They are yummy.
Here is a picture of my breakfast:
gluten free oatmeal

gluten free oatmeal
I add 1 cup of oats and 1 cup of milk in a bowl. I add cinnamon, alot. Microwave for 2 minutes. I add honey, alot. Then mix it  all together. I like my oatmeal pretty thick. You can add more milk or water if you so desire. This is an awesome and filling breakfast! Try it you'll like it.

Trying something new-oil pulling

November 7, 2013

Today was my rest day, so I just walked my normal route through the neighborhood. It was 27 degrees and beautiful. Sometimes while walking my body was urging me to run. But my head said, "Naw, today let's just have a nice peaceful walk." And that is what I did.

After doing some research on you tube about the benefits of oil pulling, I thought today I would give it a go. Now oil pulling is taking a full teaspoon of either sesame oil, sunflower oil, or coconut oil and swishing it around in your mouth for 20 minutes and then spitting it out. This is an ancient tradition and there are many healthy benefits that are linked to this activity. Such as, improved skin, better sleep, improved digestion, whiter teeth, and healthy gums. I just watched you tube videos. I did not check out the world wide web. I am sure there is even more information about the health benefits of oil pulling there.

One video suggested that for the first time you start with just half a teaspoon of oil. I used coconut oil because they said that was a good tasting oil and it also what I had in my cabinet. Coconut oil also has antibacterial properties. It is cold where I live so the coconut oil was hard. This was a strange sensation in my mouth and you had to fight the natural urge to just chew it up and swallow. Once it dissolved it was really easy to swish the oil around in your mouth. Now one thing the videos stressed was not to swallow, because as you swished, the oil was working out the toxins in your mouth and body. By swallowing the oil you were also swallowing the toxins you were getting rid of. Of course what did I do, but swallow a small amount of the oil. I thought oh well, it wasn't that much it shouldn't hurt me. Once I got the hang of it, it was very easy to do. I swished as I worked in my kitchen. I was past the 15 minute mark when all of a sudden I swallowed, out of habit mind you, and I freaked. I thought, "I just swallowed a bunch of toxins, OMG" and just instinctively spit the rest into the sink, which is a big nono they said because it can clog you sink. I must not have swallowed too much because I didn't have any adverse reactions. So while today wasn't a total fail, I have room for improvement, such as, not freaking out! They said to do this first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. But I'd also heard that you can do this up to 3 times a day. I can try again later but I know tomorrow can only get better.

I am still doing my research on this topic. Any activity that improves my health, I am excited about doing.

Let me know if you have tried oil pulling and how it has helped you. And if you accidentally swallowed the toxic poisons.

Training for the 5k

November 6, 2013

I have been walking/running on my treadmill the past 2 days. Yesterday and today were cloudy, rainy days, so in the garage I stayed and sweated. I have been enjoying the Easeinto5k app so much more now that I understand it. Tomorrow is a rest day, so I will just do my best. I have been watching you tube videos on how to train for a 5k and I feel that I am right on track.
I dug the mini trampoline out of hiding and have added this to my nightly workouts.
mini trampoline
Hey, this thing is filthy but it gets the blood pumping. I need to watch some videos on how to workout on this thing without falling off and cracking my head open on the cement. Yes, that's right I would do that.

I made a playlist for my 5k run. Here are the songs:
Try-Pink
Young and beautiful -Lana Del Ray
Summertime sadness-Lana Del Ray
Everybody talks- Neon Trees
Wild Ones (feat. Sia)
Dirt Road Anthem- Jason Aldean
Rumor has it- Adele
Rolling in the deep-Adele
Love is a battlefield-Pat Benetar
Brave -Sara Bareilles
One os us- Joan Osborne
Wheels- Jamie Cullum
Broken- Evanescence
Roar-Katy Perry
Baby did a bad, bad thing-Chris Isaak

If you know of any other songs that help you train. Let me know.

Chocolate Banana Milkshake

Last night I made my self a delicious milkshake.

The ingredients you will need are:
2 or 3 frozen bananas (it is important that they be frozen to provide the right texture)
3 ice cube
1 cup (or 1and a half cup) of almond milk
1 to 3 teaspoons coco powder (depending on how chocolately you like it)
I put all of the ingredients into the blender. I added 1 teaspoon of natural sugar. I like sweet milkshakes. I had let the bananas defrost for a few minutes, but my blender had a little trouble blending them. It took me a bit to blend it all together. But, when it was blended this milkshake was awesome. It was like eating ice cream. I had to use a spoon to eat it. I did stir in more chocolate powder because I like chocolatey shakes. I also added a spoonful of honey to make it a little sweeter tasting.
Here is a picture. The flash wasn't working for me, so it is a little yellow. Sorry.

You can see how thick this is. I am so going to make this again. I used Hersheys cocoa powder. I want to find a natural, dark chocolate powder for the next milkshakes.

Let me know if you try this recipe.

Day 8 walking

November 3, 2013

Today I walked. It as 27 degrees. I used the Easeinto5k app. It was a great walking day. I upped my running time. Later in the day, I was searching the internet. I found you tube videos that assist you with 5k training. Some of the people showed their charts that they had downloaded from websites that charts your day to day progress. So now I totally understand my app and why it only tells you to workout 3 days a week. Because the other days are rest days. Well duh. I am such a dork. This is how the charts looked that I had observed on you tube.

Rest- week 1 day 1- Rest- week 1 day 2- Rest- week1 day 3- Rest
And so forth

Tomorrow is supposed to be my rest day. Instead I will just walk and run as much as my body will let me.

Clean the shower head

Yesterday when I opened the Yahoo page, one of the little headlines was a how to clean the shower head overnight, plus 5 money saving tips. Here is the link:

For this you will need:
vinegar
a twist tie
a baggie

Fill the baggie half full with vinegar, place on shower head and secure with the twist tie. This cleaning tip is just up my alley, easy and inexpensive. All right, let's just say it "cheap."

clean shower head with vinegar

I was to excited to try this. I wrapped the shower head at 10:00 in the morning. My son gets ready for work at 2:00. So at 1:45, I unwrapped the shower head, poured a little amount of baking soda on the shower head and scrubbed with a non abrasive sponge. All of the mineral deposits were cleaned away.

Good as new. This was so easy. I am always looking for easy ways to clean the bathroom. It is the worst room to clean. If anyone tries this, let me know.

Walking has hit a slump

November 2, 2013

Ok, so, my running, has hit a slump. I have not stopped walking, just the running has slacked a lot. I was so gunho with this Easeinto5k app, that when after 3 days you were done for the week, I was disappointed. I am not blaming it on the app, well maybe a little, but I thought that I would have more than a 3 day workout. The app starts week 2 day 1 tomorrow, so maybe tomorrow will be a  better day. I have also put some pressure on myself. I discovered that in the town were I live, there is a Turkey Trot 5K walk/run. This takes place on November 24, 2013. That is less than a month away. I really want to participate in this race. But, I am so nervous. What if I can't do it. What if I chicken out. I know what if......  So that is what I'm planning on doing. "Running" in a 5k race on November 24. Wish me luck.
